Light

Light

“In the right light, at the right time, everything is extraordinary.”
~Aaron Rose

Good lighting does more than just increase visibility. We use exterior and landscape lighting as part of our design to draw attention to architectural details and enhance the beauty of your outdoor living areas. Lighting is an easy way to create a variety of effects in your outdoor space. Lights can be placed along paths, at the bottom of trees to add interest, in pools or ponds to illuminate the water and add color, or behind plants to create a dramatic silhouette.

Here are some of the ways that we use light to enhance the outdoors:

1. Down-lighting – Most people use this kind of light in their indoor rooms. By placing the lights above and pointing them down, we can imitate the effects of sunlight or moonlight. This is a great way to light decks or paths, and can also be used to accent your landscape, pool, or garden.

2. Up-lighting – We use Up-lighting to add texture and interest to natural elements such as plants, shrubs or trees, and architectural features such as retaining walls, water features, and columns.

3. Backlighting – By indirectly lighting an object from behind we can draw attention to it and create dramatic effects. We think about the effects of light and shadow in our lighting designs and incorporate just enough light to make sure your new outdoor space is looking its best at night.

4. Coloring – We can use a variety of filters to add color to your outdoors. Colored lights look especially good underwater and behind waterfalls to offer an environment that is more fun and lively for any event.

Besides using light to enhance the beauty of the outdoors, we also use it to increase safety as you live life outdoors.

Water

Water

“What makes the desert beautiful is that somewhere it hides a well.”

~Antoine de Saint-Exupery

Water dramatically enhances any design. It adds movement and sound, reflects light, and helps create a soothing and natural space. We use water in a variety of ways to foster a peaceful and calming environment when you retreat to your own backyard.

Water Features

If you find the look and sound of water relaxing, but don’t have the space for a pond, we can construct a custom water feature to accent your space. We can use various materials to construct a water feature such as stone, concrete, or steel to create a fluid part of a deck, patio, garden, or balcony. We will design the feature to recycle water so that it uses as little water as possible, which you’ll find much easier to maintain than more traditional water features. It has become increasingly popular for us to use hidden basins for water walls, water falls, and creeks, which gives visual and auditory appeal without needing a visible pool.

Ponds

If you have a little more space, we can build you a Koi pond or reflecting pool to create your own private outdoor oasis. We will combine water, stone, and plants to make a natural-looking environment. Creeks or waterfalls can also be added to your pond for more movement and sound.

Pools and Spas

We can also design and build you a pool, spa, or both. There are many pool companies that can install pools and spas, but we will incorporate a pool design with the rest of your exterior space that truly brings the wow factor and compliments your entire outdoor space. If you already have a pool, but it doesn’t fit with the rest of your yard we can work with you to refinish it, add a pool surround, flower beds, retaining walls, a lawn, or incorporate lighting to increase its beauty and functionality.

Rock

Rock

“A rock pile ceases to be a rock pile the moment a single man contemplates it, bearing within him the image of a cathedral.”

~Antoine de Saint-Exupery

This quote draws out the reality that rocks become stones when they are viewed by an artisan as a structure. Stone is a very unique element that adds strength and durability to exterior designs. Stone is also a great way to add color and texture to your design plan. It can be used for patios, walkways, retaining walls, flower beds, grass borders, columns, mailboxes, benches, deck skirts, and outdoor kitchens, just to name a few.

Floor

Stone creates a solid base for your outdoor rooms. Whether you need a small garden path or a large patio for entertaining, we will help you select the best solid material for your space.

Wall

Rock can also be used to create vertical structures and surfaces like walls, columns, raised planters, and backsplashes. Stone veneers or stucco finishes can change the look of exterior walls without full-scale remodeling. Stone can also be used to separate your outdoors into distinct living spaces, to add privacy, or accent your landscape with unique architectural details.

Xeriscape

Tired of watering your lawn? Xeriscape uses small stones or gravel in combination with plants that thrive on little water to create a low-maintenance landscape that looks good year-round, even in the middle of a drought. Xeriscapes are a great alternative to traditional landscaping techniques especially if you are dealing with limited yard space and little water.

Seating and Living

Rock can be incorporated into your outdoor living areas in a variety of ways. Stone benches provide durable outdoor seating. Stone surfaces as countertops endure the elements and are an excellent way to add the look of luxury to outdoor kitchens and dining areas.

Root

Root

“One generation plants the trees, and another gets the shade.”

~Chinese Proverb

The living elements of your outdoors are likely to draw as much or more attention as anything man-made. It is important to design your planting layout with as much care as any structure. Plants add color and texture to accent the outdoors much like fabrics do indoors. Plants also add a dynamic element of life as they grow and change throughout the year. Whether you are considering planting a few flowers, adding several trees and shrubs, or putting in a lawn, it is important to consider how your plants will work in relation to each other, the terrain, and the other elements of your outdoor design. With our help you can turn your outdoors into a living natural escape that is an extension of your home.

Selection

Your outdoors will look its best if you select plants that work well with their natural conditions. It is important to consider how much sunlight your space gets, what type of soil it has and how it drains. Also take into account your existing trees and plants and how much space they will need as they continue to grow. A well-designed landscape will provide enough space for healthy, full-sized plants without looking sparse or cluttered. Finding the best plants and calculating the right spacing can be tricky, but with our landscaping experience we can make the process easy.

In Central Texas, deer can be a big hazard to plants, but we can incorporate deer resistant plants into your design so that your outdoors will remain vibrant. Whether you are an avid gardener or a serial plant-killer, we will work with you to design a landscape plan that you can keep up with.

Trees, flowers, grasses, and shrubs are used in conjunction with architectural elements to express your style outdoors. Our goal with plant selection is to create a personal outdoor retreat that flows naturally with the other elements of your home and fits perfectly with your lifestyle.

Maintenance

We will also help you select plants that meet your special maintenance needs. Some plants require more care than others, so we will make our selections based on your desired maintenance level. From watering to pruning, we will put together a schedule for you that is easy to follow. If you enjoy having foliage but don’t want to deal with the maintenance yourself, then we will help you coordinate services to keep your outdoors looking beautiful all year long.

Life

Life

“A home is not a mere transient shelter; its essence lies in the personalities of the people who live in it.”

~Henry L Mencken

No outdoor space is complete without life, and we keep that in mind in all of our designs. We don’t just build structures; we create complete, functional outdoor living areas. Our designs are meant to revolve around you and your lifestyle. Therefore, we carefully mix different elements to provide you with a space that fulfills your dreams and works seamlessly with the rest of your life.

Relax

The outdoors are a great place to retreat from the stresses of life. We combine light, water, rock, root, and fire to enhance your experience in your outdoor sanctuary.

Cook

Outdoor Kitchens are a growing trend in outdoor design. Let us design one for you that fits your space and your cooking interests. Whether you want a full kitchen complete with sink, warming drawers, and cabinets or just a simple grilling area we can design and build an outdoor kitchen specifically for you.

Dine

Outdoor dining areas offer a fun, informal alternative to traditional dining rooms. They work well for everyday eating and entertaining, whether you choose to cook inside or out. We will help you select furniture that can withstand the elements as well as reflect your personal style. With the right covering and heating and cooling features, your outdoor dining room can be enjoyed year-round, no matter what the weather condition may be.

Play

Both kids and adults can and should have fun outdoors, and we specialize in designing and building spaces to make that happen. Whether your family’s idea of outdoor entertainment involves swinging in the yard or enjoying a margarita by the pool, we can make that a reality. For the kids, how about a play set? For the adults, we can design and build outdoor bars, casitas, and unique entertaining areas. It doesn’t matter whether your space is big or small, we can help you have more fun outdoors.

Work

Most people only go outdoors for a limited range of activities, but with the right design there is no limit to what you can do outside. Why not make work more enjoyable with a peaceful garden office?

Live

When most people think of outdoor living spaces, they think of generic wood decks or basic patios, which is why we take the time to sketch out our ideas so you can see how the design ideas will look. Essentially, we design and build outdoor living spaces that are creative, unique, and functional.

Enclosed structures like sun rooms, pool houses, and guest houses can be built to bring the outdoors in. Wood and steel structures help create defined outdoor rooms. Pergolas, trellises, arbors, balconies, gazebos, decks, and awnings, provide shade, spatial definition, and covering for you as you live life outdoors.

Privacy fences of all kinds help create your own private space within your yard. Decks, paths, and bridges provide specific areas for traffic and give you, your family, and guests the perfect environment, right in your own backyard.

We love it when our clients end up spending more time outdoors, due to having a better designed and constructed exterior space.

Fire

Fire

“There is no place more delightful than one’s own fireside.”

~Marcus Tullius Cicero

Fire is another element to add to your outdoor design plan. A custom fire feature, outdoor fireplace, or fire pit adds warmth and ambience to any space and can help you enjoy the outdoors year-round. Whether you enjoy the aesthetics of a gentle blaze or like to cook over an open flame, we can provide you with the fire feature that meets your needs while complimenting the entire design.

Light

We use fires big and small to add another kind of light to the outdoors. Gas lamps can perform many of the same functions as electric lights while creating an ambiance that is difficult to match. Fireplaces can be added to create a cozy, dimly lit room outside. Fire pits are also great for adding light to uncovered areas.

Warmth

Outdoor fireplaces and fire pits are a safe and easy way to keep your outdoor rooms at a comfortable temperature all year long.

Cooking

Fire, whether gas or wood burning, adds a distinct flavor to food and can turn cooking into a fun activity for family and friends. With a grill, custom fire pit, fireplace, or brick oven you can enjoy cooking all of your favorite treats outdoors. We will work with you to make sure that whatever fire feature you choose will be incorporated safely into your exterior space.
